Numbers and dates typing practice: six drills for numbers, codes and dates, with a numeric keyboard

Practise the details that interrupt ordinary typing

Numbers, dates and office codes can interrupt a comfortable rhythm even when you copy ordinary sentences confidently. The useful next step is a focused typing exercise containing those details, followed by a check against the reference. This worksheet gives you six short drills and one longer passage. Its quantities, names and records are fictional, so you can practise without using anyone's private information.

Use it when the result comparison shows missing digits, changed capitals or punctuation errors around times and codes. It is a suggested training exercise for English copying, not an official recruitment test. The tasks are deliberately short enough to review carefully. Finishing a short drill does not establish your speed over a full examination session.

Prepare the custom-text practice field

Open the free English typing practice tool, check the language and duration, and expand Choose practice type. Select My own paragraph, paste one exercise into the setup field and choose Use this paragraph. Copy the exercise text only. The answer field requires your own typing and blocks pasted answers.

Choose whether to allow backspace before starting, and record that setting. Two minutes is a convenient available limit for these drills, but the attempt ends earlier when you reach the reference length. The timer begins with your first input, and the result uses the actual time spent. Treat a twenty-second drill as a twenty-second drill rather than a two-minute speed result. You can join the six short exercises with spaces for a longer reference.

Drill 1: preserve leading zeros

Copy this text: Register 0048 contains 6 entries. File 0072 is on Shelf 03. The next record is 0105, and the review room is 02.

When loading the exercise, start at Register and omit the words Copy this text. Leading zeros are part of this invented reference. Check that 0048 has four digits and that Shelf 03 has two. A copied identifier is different from a calculation: changing 0048 to 48 loses characters that the exercise asks you to preserve. Review missing digits before increasing your pace.

Drill 2: copy time punctuation

Copy this text: The first session starts at 09:15. The second starts at 11:40. Break time is 13:05, and the final review begins at 16:30.

Check the colon in each time, the final full stop and the space after each sentence. Read a time as one small group before entering it. If you repeatedly enter a semicolon instead of a colon, practise the relevant key combination slowly using your own keyboard layout. These times are fictional exercise details, not a current timetable.

Drill 3: keep the date format unchanged

Copy this text: Entry A uses 08/10/2026. Entry B uses 9 October 2026. Entry C uses 2026-10-12. Keep each date in the format shown.

The exercise deliberately contains different formats. Copy their characters rather than converting them into your preferred style. Check the slashes in Entry A, the capital O in October and the hyphens in Entry C. The task tests copying, so interpreting a date and rewriting it into another valid format would still differ from this reference.

Drill 4: maintain capitals and code separators

Copy this text: Order JP-204 has 12 folders. Order JP-240 has 21 folders. Send Box AB-018 to Room C-07 before the afternoon review.

Compare JP-204 with JP-240 character by character. The same digits appear in a different order, and the quantities also differ. Check each hyphen and capital letter separately. If one code is difficult, practise it once in a slower short sentence, then return to the complete exercise so that you also practise the transition into the next word.

Drill 5: check decimals and commas

Copy this text: The sample worksheet lists 125.50, 1,250.00 and 75.05. Copy the comma and decimal point exactly. The reference code is R-005.

This is a copying exercise using invented values. Look carefully at the position of the decimal point and the two zeros after it. A comma is included in 1,250.00 and is absent from the other values. The tool compares the typed text with the reference; it does not verify an account balance or judge a financial calculation. Do not replace these examples with real account details.

Drill 6: combine details within sentences

Copy this text: On 12 October, Kavya checked 18 notebooks, 7 pens and 4 folders. At 10:25, she marked File KN-036 as ready for Room 08.

This exercise brings ordinary words, punctuation, capitals and digits together. Check whether the transition from checked to 18 caused a hesitation, then inspect KN-036 and Room 08. Record the specific transition that interrupted you. A note such as missing the zero before 8 gives you a clearer next exercise than a general instruction to type faster.

Longer passage: a fictional training-centre delivery

At 09:20, Kavya opened the delivery register at a training centre in Pune. The first note listed Order PN-042, dated 12 October 2026. It contained 18 notebooks, 7 pens and 4 folders. She placed the items on a clear table and checked each quantity before entering the record. One folder had a loose cover, so she kept it apart and wrote a short explanation beside the entry.

The next delivery belonged to Order PN-024. Its code looked similar, but the quantities were different: 8 notebooks, 17 pens and 6 folders. Kavya checked the full line rather than copying numbers from the previous entry. At 10:25, a colleague reviewed the register and matched the order codes with the slips. They placed File 0036 in Drawer 08 and kept the unfinished record on the review desk.

Before lunch, the coordinator read the notes and checked which supplies were ready for the afternoon class. The register showed the delivered quantities and the item requiring attention. Kavya saved the working copy with a clear file name and left a short message for the next volunteer. Complete entries helped another person continue the work without guessing a code, changing a date or counting every item again.

Check the reference before drawing a conclusion

For the longer passage, copy only its three paragraphs into the setup field. First compare PN-042 and PN-024, then the quantities in each delivery. Check File 0036, Drawer 08 and both times. Finally review the normal words and spaces around those details. A copying error can occur at the boundary between a code and a word, so inspecting only the digits can miss the useful pattern.

The final character comparison shows differences in the submitted text. It does not provide a complete history of corrections you made while typing. Read the typing speed and accuracy explanation to understand the five-character standard word and the site's scoring method. Keep result numbers from these short drills separate from sustained passage attempts.

Make a repeatable practice record

Write the exercise name, selected duration, actual elapsed time, backspace setting and one recurring difference in a note. Repeat the difficult pattern at a comfortable pace, then use a different exercise to check whether your copying remains accurate. Compare attempts made with the same keyboard and settings, and record an early finish instead of hiding it.

For ordinary sentence flow, try the original five-minute English practice paragraphs. For a broader routine, follow the seven-day accuracy plan. You can use this guide's Print / Save PDF button to keep the worksheet. If copying from a PDF changes punctuation or spacing, compare the extracted text with this page before using it as your reference.
